Shrimp Shumai (steamed dumplings)

shrimp shumai

Shumai is a traditional chinese dumpling, primarily served as a dim sum dish. Dim sum is a cantonese term that describes a dining style where you are served many small dishes of different chinese foods, often in bamboo containers. Dim sum is composed of hundreds of types including dumplings, egg rolls, sticky buns, crab rangoon, just to name a few. Look here for other examples and recipes.

Serves: 4-5
Prep Time: 30-40 min
Cook Time: 10 min

Ingredients:

1/2 lb cooked and cleaned shrimp, chopped
20-25 circular won-ton wrappers (I cut the square ones into circles using a pasta cutter)
1/2 red pepper, finely chopped
1 small onion, finely chopped
3-4 scallions finely sliced (save one for garnish if desired)
1/2 Tbsp soy sauce
1/2 Tbsp rice vinegar

Directions:

  • mix together shrimp, red pepper, onion, scallions, soy sauce, and vinegar
  • lightly moisten the edges of the won ton wrapper
  • place 2 tsp of shrimp mixture in the center of wrapper
  • sequentially pinch small sections of the edge to form ridges, leaving the center open
  • place parchment paper on bottom of bamboo steamer
  • add dumplings, cover, and steam for about 10 min
  • serve warm with soy sauce and rice vinegar sauce

Potential Alternatives:

  • replace shrimp with tofu or other vegetables to make vegetarian
  • use basil or cilantro instead of scallions
  • if you don't have a bamboo steamer you can also steam them by placing a dish into a wok or frying pan, adding water, and covering.
